Talking To The Taliban: Response Post (due on blog by class time)
Click above to view an incredibly extensive multimedia project by the Globe and Mail on the mind-set of the Taliban, published on March 22, 2008. The project was produced by Graeme Smith, a reporter who has been in Kandahar since 2006, working with a researcher and translator. One might say that in part, Talking To The Taliban represents Smith’s effort to reach beyond his own limitations as an Anglo-Canadian reporter in order to present the views of Taliban fighters. Explore all the various parts of the project – the mini-documentary, the graphics, the footage, the timeline and the textual components – and write a response to the work, including answers to the following questions in your observations: what were some of the difficulties in producing this project? How many people were involved? What was the reporter able to accomplish through multimedia that he might not otherwise have been able to accomplish. In total, how many people were involved in the final package, and how many of them were in Afghanistan vs Canada?
Finally, draw a few comparisons between this piece and the multimedia package on Canada’s mental health crisis that I discussed on Tuesday. What are the primary differences in audience, genre and design between these two packages?
